I just wanted to say....Happy New Year!

Before the champagne bottles are popped, before the New Years kisses are given, before the clock chimes 12 and 2014 is here, I just wanted to wish you all a very happy new year and thank you for your support here in 2013! Never had I had so many opportunities, and experiences before related to beauty and blogging and I'm very grateful to have been so involved this year. This was a year of self realisations, and now as we move into 2014, I want this new year to be one of growth, promotion and enjoyment.

Source

I was telling my boyfriend the other day that I don't promote my blog enough to the Barbadian populace, furthermore to those around me. It's a very well kept secret unless you're very close to me (or so I think). So this coming year, I'm going to try my hardest to make sure I get the content I've worked so hard on out there. In 2013, I've been able to improve my posting times, and my content from that of 2012 and I aim to get even better in 2014. I no longer want to let opportunities pass me by. This may not be conventional, but it definitely is something I enjoy doing, so why not share it!

Looking forward to pushing on into 2014. Thank you all for sticking through with me! Have a safe and fun beginning to the new year!

Oh and here's a little something I was able to work in this year that I'm quite proud of :).

Top 8 Posts of 2013!

Hey all! I've actually never done one of these posts, but this year my blog and I underwent some changes and growth. So I want to shared with you my most popular posts for 2013. This year has been pretty good for my blogging as I got more involved, tried to keep a schedule and make links with other bloggers, despite my YouTube channel being on hiatus.

I really hope that in 2014 I will figure out how to get my editing done for YouTube as I do miss making videos. I tried out the YouTube editor on one video I had recorded since June, but that definitely is not as professional as the program I was using to edit my videos on before.
As I hope that my blog will be better than ever, with new, interesting content just constantly being posted. (that's the hardest part) I have a few ideas for 2014, but of course I'd love to hear your suggestions too.

Without further jabber, here's the top posts for 2013! (in no particular order)

  1. April Beauty Favourites
  2. e.l.f Essentials All Over Color Stick Swatches & Review
  3. L.A. Girl Pro Concealer Review (Guest post)
  4. Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream Review
  5. Maybelline Vivids Lipstick in Electric Orange Swatches & Review
  6. My All Star products of 2012
  7. Sensationnel Premium Too Mixx Multi Curl Weave First Impressions Review
  8. Smashbox PhotoOp Eyeshadow Trio Swatches & Review

I'm so happy that all of these posts have over 200 views, some up to 1000 views even! I hope next year we'll have more interaction (comments, guest posts, maybe a blog hop *hint hint*) on this blog as I want to make this a community for beauty and life chit chat!

Shingles Prevention tips by Heathline.com

Shingles is a painful condition caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, also known as the chickenpox virus. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 1 million cases of shingles have been reported every year in the United States, and almost 1 out of every 3 Americans will develop it once in their lifetime. In some rare cases, an individual can have a second or third episode. Anyone who has recuperated from chickenpox may develop shingles, though it is more prevalent among men and women 60 years of age and older.

Once the chickenpox virus enters the body, it remains dormant in the nerve roots and for some people, it stays dormant forever. However, in some cases it still has the tendency to act up due to aging, increased stress levels or diseases. While it isn’t life-threatening, shingles can cause painful fluid-filled blisters, red rashes and itching. Some people also experience fever, chills, headache and fatigue. Here are several recommendations that can help in preventing shingles:

Maybelline Clean Express Makeup Remover | Review

Howdy! Hope the Christmas holidays are going well for you all and that you're not overworking yourselves. I did a brief review of this product on my Facebook page and here I finally am to do the full review on the blog. I purchased the Maybelline Clean Express makeup remover from Collin's Pharmacy for $11.50BDS, in October, and I'm telling you it's money well spent.

I was very impressed by the power of this makeup remover to get off mascara and eyeliners especially, because wipes just do not do the trick some times. I can soak a cotton ball and just leave this on my eyes for a few seconds, then wipe away the day's eye makeup. I haven't really used it remove makeup all over my face, as I wash my face makeup off when I remember, but it does remove foundation and BB cream very easily for the times that I have tried it.  This product is very gentle on the eyes, I've experienced little to no stinging even when removing eyeliner from my waterline.

L'Oréal True Match Super Blendable Foundation | Review

Hey all! I know I hauled this product since September (maybe?) but, it takes me a bit longer to wear foundation as I'm hardly ever go anywhere that I would need to sport a full made-up face. I did try the this foundation a number of times and I must say, I'm in love. This was hyped by Moden Makeup and plenty of beauty Youtubers, so when I saw it in Collin's Pharmacy I knew I had to try it! I'm happy that I did, because there was lots that it shocked me with.

The packaging is a simple glass bottle, which reminds me of those bottles the pharmacy has for their generic oils and other concoctions. There's no pump this sadly, so pouring it out is the only option, though pouring it onto a surface or your hand is not the most sanitary. This product was  $21.40BDS if I remember correctly, which is considerably affordable.

Natural Cold and Flu Prevention | Guest Post

There is no known cure for the cold and flu, thus a conscious effort towards prevention is your next base option, and for that matter, your only option. The best approach is to keep your body healthy to keep you from being susceptible to infection caused by cold and flu viruses. Getting a flu shot is effective, though it doesn’t guarantee you will never get sick. Vaccinations can help in keeping the symptoms more mild, as well as shorten the duration of the illness in case you get sick. However, if you don’t want to get a flu shot, here are several natural remedies that can help you survive the cold and flu season.

15 DIY Gift Ideas | Gift Guide 2013

Hey all! Around Christmas time it always seems like our budgets are the tightest. There are so many people we appreciate in our lives that we want to get them all a gift or two. However we can't always do that with the price of some items. Here are a few affordable DIY gifts that can be small tokens of appreciation for the people in your life. Great for us students who have limited budgets! Many of them seem pretty easy, even for persons like me who can't draw any fancy designs.

Apologies that this post is so late, I really did not get the chance to post this earlier today, but I hope you do enjoy it!

Duty Free Day Lip Products (RW) | Beauty

Hey all! It was around this time, 2 years ago that I picked up what are still some of my favourite lip products, and what I thought was the best shopping day Barbados ever had. Duty-Free day!

For us locals, there's this steep tax on most if not all imported goods, and although that's good for Government revenue and all that jazz, it really is a stifler to purchasing anything. Imaging a Revlon lipstick usually $7.99USD, costing you $15USD. Say what.... that aint right, but that's what we deal with in Barbados. Sadly too, many "sales" are never really much of a deal and the stuff I really want rarely goes on sale, nor is there coupons. So imagine my glee when Duty Free day rolled around in 2011 and I was just getting into lipsticks.

Hey all! Everyone's been busy doing gift guides since November, and I'm yet again late to the game. Anyway, better late than never right?  This year I decided to do the first 2 post titles in French as I miss the language, after studying it for like 5 years. Go figure!

DIY Lip Scrub (RW) | Beauty

Hey all! Here's another Rewind Wednesday for you. But before we get to that, I wanted to inform my Bajan viewers that Cherish Cosmetique still has the deal on with the Clearasil PerfectaWash sets available and even cheaper than before. So now you'll be getting it for $10.99 rather than $15.99! Mine lasted me just over 6 months, so it's really a good buy. I just have to figure out how I can refill it with something else, since the refills aren't sold here.

Since it's the beginning of the colder months, we want to keep our skin since and supple, especially our lips. My lips used to be chapped all the time especially in the cold A/C of uni classrooms. Luckily after using this lip scrub and a my Maybelline Baby Lips, I've seen way less flaky lips. Thank God!

Of course you could change up this recipe to suit your tastes and budget, or what you have at home too.

What you will need:

2 parts Coconut oil or Olive oil
1/2 of lemon/lime
2 - 3 parts Brown sugar
1 - 2 parts Granulated sugar
1 part Golden syrup, or honey or any liquid sweetener

Instructions:
  1. Mix the brown and white sugar together in a bowl.
  2. In another bowl (or cup), combine the cocnut oil (I used 2 capfuls), half of a lemon, and a teaspoon of Lyons Golden syrup.
  3. Add your liquid mixture to your sugar and mix until well combined.
  4. If your product is too liquid, then add more brown sugar, if it is too stiff, add more liquid (either oil or juice).
  5. Store your scrub in an airtight container, or use right away to exfoliate dry lips.

Independence Day OOTD & FOTD | Beauty

Hey all! As promised here's what I wore on Independence day night. Final exams are around the corner so I was happy for the break before diving hard into the studying and exams.  Excuse the quality of the photos please, it was quite dark and I definitely need to look into a better camera for low light situations.

I was headed out to a games evening so my outfit was over the top, and I quite the make up simple too. I was really excited to wear my NYX studio eyeliner and I had been practising with it before because the applicator is a bit tedious and tricky. I did a thick cat-eye with it and left the rest of my eye bare of eyeshadows. For blush as in my everyday routine, I used the Smashbox cream blush in Capitvate, and I used the Garnier BB cream to even out my skin tone. For the lips, I used a KleanColor Mauve lipstick over NYX Natural lip liner.  My hair was just doing it's own thing, so don't even bother to ask about it, hahah. My dress was from Forever21 about a year ago, shoes are from Payless ShoeSource this summer (wear them to death cuz I love 'em!).

After the games evening some friends and I did go out for a few drinks afterwards in the Gap since we weren't feeling to go home so early (being it a Bank Holiday and all).  It was actually quite busy in the Gap (St. Lawrence Gap) and we luckily ended up in the Old Jamm Inn. It was pretty good and got better as time went too. It wasn't too stuffy or overcrowded. I loved the atmosphere, definitely a nice chilling spot. Hopefully we'll go back there after exams to party :)!

Another year of Pride & Industry! 47 years of Independence!

A great big Happy Independence goes out to Barbados and all my Bajan readers! I know I posted some Thanksgiving deals during the week, but trust that I did not forget our lovely island's celebrations! I sadly wanted to create a very Independence-themed makeup look but the time has gotten away, as I've explained in Wednesday's post. I'll see if I can put up an OOTD or FOTD when I go out tomorrow.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this photo that I took while roaming Bridgetown one Saturday evening. Nothing says Barbados quite like Bridgetown, it may change stores here and there but it's mostly the same. Despite the hiccups we've been experiencing with our government and economy, I am proud to be BARBADIAN!

Have a safe and happy Independence day! Here's to another 47 years of Pride and Industry!

Online Deals for Black Friday & Cyber Monday!

Hey all! I really wanted to post something on Monday and even Sunday, but my PC has been giving me a few issues (as usual now it seems). On top of that I've been busy trying to finish up work before exams, and I have to start my final studying. Goodness! It can get so busy all at once. Let's not add blogging block to that situation...

Anyway Black Friday is coming up, and this year I'm a bit earlier on the deals than last year. So I wanted to share a few with you, including coupons and links. Obviously I'm  from Barbados but even though we're celebrating Independence this weekend, we can still treat ourselves to a few good sales! I only picked out the online deals, because just about anyone with a credit card can access them.

Ring the Alarms.. it's a Boyfriend Invasion of this blog!

Sound the alarms! Ring the bells! And call the blog police! It’s the “Boyfriend Invasion”...

Oh what a sensation and a trill it is to be the one writing this post for you awesome readers. It’s me, Tyrell that loveable peach of a Boyfriend that appears from time to time to shake things up a bit and cleverly forcing those smiles on your faces to jump out. Speaking of smiles, I was walking through a store doing some shopping for some guy stuff and as I was passing through the makeup and female beauty section.
I caught myself checking out the beauty products, how weird is that? What’s even weirder was that I had a huge smile on my face because I knew the difference between foundation, concealer and finishing powder. It was crazy!  As if the store phenomenon was not weird enough, I find that when random females walk by I can tell what make up suits their complexion, what powders they should use, if they need foundation or finishing powder and when they need to stop looking like a box of Crayola “jizzed” on their face.

Ladies it’s because I do not want to be alone in this world of guys who understand and check out make up that I have invaded this blog to bring to you three (3) easy yet effective ways to get your guys more interested in your make-up and beauty products. Now why do you want this?  Santa is coming to town in a couple days and I’m sure some of you ladies have been naughtier as opposed to being nice wink wink…. Enough said. Santa isn’t gifting you it’s us, the boyfriend the husbands and the nice guy in your friend zone. Therefore having a guy who understands what you like and what may help you look even more beautiful than you already are would definitely bring a joyful smile to your holiday.

The truth is this method is what got me interested in makeup and made me start paying attention to it. I did some acting some time ago and I had my very own professional makeup artist ha-ha you know who. She made me look amazing and during the process she told me everything she was using. So it’s no secret what this step is about. Get your guy in a chair, get your brushes and your powders and make him up. Most guys are actually just as vain as females and they like to know they look hot. As you are creating a look on your guy talk him through the process let him see what you’re using and what you’re doing.  With the end result make him wow. It is important that you take pictures to save and preserve the moment to remind him of how awesome it made him look.

The Live show is a true eye opener for most males so it is a safe bet considering you can pull it off. This is where you find the time to sit down with your guy and give him a live show of you making yourself pretty.  I suggest you apply make up to one half of your face and leave the other natural at the end your guy will notice the difference. Men are logical creatures we thrive on things that make sense but sometimes it’s hard to see the value of something if it isn’t in our face. Therefore using the live show and with a little bit of explanation show your guy what you can do.

If you are bold enough and you trust him enough ladies this will work for you. Give him the chance to do your make up.
That's all it takes!

Until next time I stage an invasion here...
*wink wink*

e.l.f. Brow Kit | Review

Hey all! For some reason I've misplaced all the product photos I've had for the e.l.f. Studio Brow kit in Medium, which I had for some time to review but, I'm still going to review it anyway. You've probably seen me mention this product in a couple of beauty favourites and also in my eyebrow tutorial and my everyday makeup routine recently.
Source

I first heard Shaanxo on YouTube (from NZ) rave about this brow kit and when I decided to order from e.l.f earlier this year, that was one of the first things I put in my cart. It definitely lives up to the hype she gave it. It lasts all day, the colour (Medium) works well with my hair colour, especially since I wear dark-rimmed glasses, so it balances out the rest of my face. I love to alternate between the powder and the brow mousse.

Taken from my eyebrow routine
The brush which comes with this is so useless though, I wish I had bought one of their brow brushes to try along with this. The one which comes with it is a dual ended mini with a thick side for the powder and a very flimsy angled end for the cream. But for the price, I really shouldn't complain too much. this was $3USD and e.l.f. always has a promotion going on.

Taken from my Everyday makeup routine (OMG the numbers match up, not intentional!)
I use the cream some days and the powder on others, and I may even use both for longer staying power, but it doesn't move around too much on your brows. The brow cream is waxy enough to keep my brows in place under normal circumstances. I suggest putting your shirt on first, then applying this haha. There's also tiny mirror in this kit which is just big enough for you to see you brows and eyes. Good for on the go grooming.

Brow done with e.l.f. Brow kit and then e.l.f. brow gel brushed through to make them look more natural.

The Verdict:

Pros:

  • Affordable
  • Pigmented powder and brow cream
  • Lasts all day
  • Cream is a good texture (waxy enough to hold brows in place)
  • Cream or Powder can be used alone or together
  • Simple yet sturdy packaging

Cons:

  • Brush provided was absolute rubbish
  • Availability in Barbados

The Raw Sugar:

Overall I'm very pleased with this little kit. It was affordable, convenient and the packaging i simple yet effective. My only annoyance was the brush provided, as it was such a dud. That should never be used with this product.

Where you can get it: e.l.f. website, Target (USA)

Disclaimer: I purchased this product with my money. Opinions are my own.

National Emblems (RW) | Barbados

Hey all! Two years ago I posted on the official emblems of Barbados and  today I'm going to recap them with you since it's the month of National Independence. My tiny little island has to stand out from others some how right?

For some reason when people hear Caribbean, they think very small-mindedly. Little to no sophistication, coconut trees everywhere, grass huts and endless beaches. But the Caribbean is way more than that, although it may not be top notch as it is in a 1st world country we still have infrastructure, governance and people (mostly educated). In representing Barbados on a global stage, we just like other developing countries, have our own flag, national dish, pledge, anthem, flower etc.

Above is our Coat of Arms which your would find on all official Government documents. The motto is Pride and Industry, something which us Bajans are forgetting a bit more everyday sad to say. On the Coat of Arms is the Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) representative of our fishing industry and the national bird the Pelican which once inhabited a small island off our coast called Pelican Island. This island has been incorporated into our sea port, the Deep Water Harbour and now you had find local craft vendors in the surrounding areas. Also on the COA, you will find our national flower, the Pride of Barbados, the Bearded Fig tree from hence Barbados is named and a hand holding sugar cane in a satire cross, representative of our sugar industry, once our main source of income.

L'Oréal True Match Super Blendable Concealer | Review

Happy Birthday Ashley!!! Just wanted to say that first :).

Besides being one of my bestest friend's birthday, today I have a review on the L'Oréal True Match Super Blendable concealer crayon that I recently purchased from Collins for about $18.10BDS. First off, the colour selection is kind of iffy. I thought I would have needed a darker shade because the C6 foundation looks a lot darker, but some how the Warm 6-7-8 shade concealer works quite well with my skin tone. I don't know how it would fare for darker women though.

This is a very blendable (as the name states), creamy concealer in an automatic jumbo pencil packaging. So it's very hassle-free. No sharpening is necessary and the point stays for a while depending on how you use it. You just twist the bottom for more product to come out. It's very easy to apply and looks good even if you're not wearing foundation on the rest of your skin.I found it stuck a bit to my dry patches (from dried up pimples), but nothing too noticeable that I didn't want to wear it.

November = Barbados National Independence!

Hey all! It's the month of November finally which means National independence for Barbados!

This year we are celebrating 47 years of Pride and Industry! Last year, I did a video on the lights and banners in the city. this year I won't be making a video, but hopefully I'll have tons of photos to show you the sights and sounds of Barbadian life around independence!

Also In other news, I've finally reached 100 GFC blog followers! Don't worry I haven't forgetting about the giveaway I had promised either. I'm working on it :).

If you're a Bajan, what's your favourite part about National Independence? I used to really love NIFCA, but now it's so rushed and quieted that it's over before you recognise it's begun lol.

Everyday Makeup Routine | Beauty

Hey all! I am a college student and though you would think that allows you to wear all the makeup in the world, people in Barbados are still quite shy about it. (funny enough, because when you go to work it's even harder to wear bright colours and such.)

Anyway I'm not the kind of person to put on loads of makeup or bright colours on my face for day-to-day wear, but I do enjoy doing my makeup for school to look put together and sometimes with a pop of colour on my lips. Still on the look out for a great coloured mascara so I can sport that more often too. I like to keep it simple also because I don't like to waste time going into the school bathrooms to fix or reapply anything. Just too much hassle, and I usually don't have more makeup than a lip product in my bag at any given point. I'm just that lazy haha!

Anyway, here's what I typically do in the morning, before I rush off to classes.

  1.  Moisturise my lips using my Maybelline Baby Lips
  2. Add moisture to the rest of my face with coconut oil. Just a drop will do.
  3. Cover my spots and unevenness with Garnier BB Cream. If I don't feel like using BB cream I'll just stick to my Neutrogena Ultra Sheer sunscreen (SPF45).
  4. Make sure to blend the BB cream well into my skin so it doesn't look splotchy.
  5. Here's how the finish of the BB cream looks.
  6. Sometimes the BB creams a bit too dewy, or I might have put on too much product, so I blot with a tissue. It's an easy way of not looking cakey.
  7. Fix my eyebrows, and occasionally I put a bit of concealer underneath the brow to clean it up.
  8. Apply blush on my cheek bones.
  9. Apply bronzer to slightly contour and add life back to my forehead. I put a bit in the hollows of my cheek bones too.
  10. Apply generous coats of mascara.
  11. Sometimes I highlight my inner corners with Crisp from my Smashbox eyeshadow trio.
  12. Finally apply some lip gloss, or lipstick if I'm feeling up to it that day.

This can take me about 10- 15 minutes. Even less if I really rush it along but, I really don't make too much of a fuss about it. Some days just sunscreen and mascara is all I'm wearing! How do you typicall get ready on mornings for school or work?

Rihanna Concert in 2011 (RW) | Beauty

Hey all! Another throwback post, this time back to 2011 when Rihanna performed live in Barbados. This was also supposed to be the case this Saturday (2nd November), unfortunately it was cancelled. (Quite last minute too). I'm not too thrilled about it, but I don't think I would have been lucky enough to have gone this time around either. Anyway, I rather reminisce on the LOUD concert that I did attend.

That time, my hair was still natural and I wore some braids (which my mother and I had plait on) so my hair went into a sleek bun, to go with my blue one shoulder dress. I did my makeup to match my dress haha, so I had a blue and silver look going on. Silly me didn't take enough photos of the makeup that time around. But I did get some of my nails :).

As for the show, it was amazing! I sang along to every song that I knew, partied with my friends and my sister and just had a great time. I never wanted the night to end. I'm so happy that I carried an extra pair of shoes too, because standing for long is not easy in high heels, so I had taken silver sandals with me. Thank God!

It was one of the best nights I had that summer. For the full article (and video), you can click here, and here for details on the nails!

October Favourites | Beauty

October flew by so fast! But I still found a couple new products to love along with some oldies. Some of these products I have reviews on already, and I'll have some more coming up soon on the newer items.

Let's start with the new stuff! You know how much I loved my Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream, but it was a bit too dewy during summer, so I had stopped using it. I had always wanted to try the Garnier BB cream and when I saw that the Combination-Oily Skin formula was available in Collins, I had to jump on it. I lusted this for a while because I heard it gave a more matte finish than the original. I love this! Good coverage, matte, yet it looks natural and it lasts all day on me!

Photography and FOTN | Chit Chat

Hey all! I am currently doing a photography course at uni that I've always wanted to do and I'm very excited about it, because, not only do I get to learn about photography, but it's practical, we take photos with a DSLR! This is my type of dream camera, the type of camera I'd like to get most. In class, we're using an older model Nikon but it's still pretty good. However, I would love to get my hands on a Canon T3i or the T5i (which is just too expensive for my poor budget)!

Almay Oil-free Eye makeup Remover pads (RW) | Review

Hey all! Apologies for being a no show on Monday, I have literally no explanation for that, besides that it was my birthday, haha! Does that count? Since I wasn't able to bring you a review on Monday, here's one from 2012 about the Almay eye makeup remover pads, which are still a really great product up to now. Mind you back then I was on picture overload for blog posts, so excuse me please.

You can see the original article here.

Synopsis:

I absolutely LOVE this eye make up remover! It's just fabulous. You get 80 round pads, saturated with their amazing eye make up remover. These pads do not dry up very fast and each is nicely saturated, there's no need to squeeze out excess product. It's like they soaked each pad separately with the right amount of remover.
Don't let the thinness fool you, these are powerful!

The power of these pads to remove waterproof mascara is outstanding! The Falsies mascara is off within 10 seconds! For nights out or special occasions, I wear more eye makeup, yet these pads have been able to remove layers of eye make up very briefly. It's so amazing, again I'll say I love this make up remover.

This is how easily it dissolved the Maybelline Falsies Waterproof formula
